Nr. 170      | Casa Ambra - Siena - Tuscany
Casa Ambra stands within the walls of what was in the Middle Ages a fortified town or ‘borgo’. The streets and alleys of this hillside settlement near Sienna follow their own individual logic. In the 15th century the stronghold suffered in the continuous wars between Sienna and Florence, but that is all in the distant past: ruins are repaired and the village has regained its original quality. ‘Original’ means there is no kitsch, no out-of-place lawns: instead the feeling is tended, graceful and beautifully secret.

Description:
Imagine an ancient Tuscan village on a rise, surrounded by 700 olive trees, numerous orchards and beyond these, wooded hills. The few houses nestle on various levels, connected by narrow, crooked passages. There is a small church. On the remaining town walls which surround the borgo protectively, wild capers grow. The place is never crowded – it is not a typical holiday village and the scattered houses are mainly privately owned. This wonderfully unique situation promises rest and recuperation.

Casa Ambra is a detached house within the borgo divided into two holiday flats. During July and August, the flats are let as a pair accommodating 8 people in all. During other months, it is possible to rent the ground floor. The second apartment is either empty or occupied by the owner. However, the garden is exclusively yours and is used neither by the owner nor other visitors.

The 15th century house has been sympathetically restored. It is highly comfortable, furnished with a wonderful mixture of antique and modern styles. Enormous wooden beams, terracotta and natural stone floors and walls were retained. The living room displays Tuscan country flair, with an open fireplace and traditional plastered walls.

A door leads from the ground floor kitchen to your private garden. Here, a table under the pergola is the perfect dining area from which to take in ever fascinating sunsets on a wonderful hillscape. At the entrance there is a smaller terrace which benefits from the morning sun at breakfast time.

The large swimming pool is shaped like a natural pond. Situated on a raised terrace between gorse bushes and cypress trees, it blends into the surrounding countryside. Guests have privileged access to a tennis court with a panoramic view, and for cooler days there is a sauna. Please note that the pool is shared with all stying guests of the "Borgo".

You may not want to leave this lovely spot, but if you are tempted to explore, this is the perfect starting point for getting to know Tuscany. Sienna and Arezzo are 30 minutes away, Florence just one hour. The classical hill towns of Pienza, Montalcino, Montepulciano or Cortona are within easy reach. Closer still are the famous Chianti towns: Castellina, Radda, Gaiole and Greve.
